Ashley Hicks, Interior Design

"the staircase"

Ashley Hick writes, "I designed the balustrade in grey steel to complement the original leaded window, with a sweeping curve of handrail elegantly wrapping around a playful newel-post of sculpted oak 'boulders': an organic, earthy counterpoint to Rolf's crystals and all that glass slickness. The 'boulders' are loose on a steel pole, so that you can spin them as you pass, like a giant toy."

Ashley Hicks was born in 1963 and trained at the Architectural Association in London. He worked briefly for his father, interior designer David Hicks, before starting his own practice designing interiors and furniture.

In 1997 Ashley Hicks designed his first furniture collection, named Jantar Mantar, starting with his interpretation of an ancient Greek Klismos chair. In 2002 he published Design Alchemy, a review of interiors and products designed by him and his wife Allegra (they married in 1990 but separated in 2008; they have two daughters.) Ashley designed a series of Allegra Hicks shops, and ranges of home accessories sold in them.

Ashley wrote a personal memoir of his father, David Hicks: Designer, in 2002, with a foreword by Tom Ford. Starting in 2003, he created David Hicks by Ashley Hicks collections of fabrics and carpet. In 2009 he published a definitive review of his father’s career and life, David Hicks: A Life of Design." (text taken from his site)
