Prototype Marc Lepage Parachute Lamp for Knoll
USA
c.1972
One of a kind and complete inflatable lamp, produced by Knoll in the early '70s. A motor in the chrome base inflates the parachute sock, which is lit by 4 internal bulbs. Wonderful example of soft-sculpture furniture that emerged out of the '60s counterculture movement; Lepage’s works were described as “soft, sensitive machines—to be touched." A small version of this lamp was put into limited production, and this large version was used in advertising, but never produced.
