"Of course. These things I mentioned before; belief, memories, faith, emotion - are the components of spirituality. They co-exist in some kind of floating, changing space. Symbols are the cues that link people together who share some of these beliefs and memories. It's not necessarily a religious phenomenon, I often feel spiritually connected to people who listen to the same music as me and love it for similar reasons. It makes me nervous but also fascinated when spirituality meets structure… let's call it religion. I like to use religious imagery because it's often beautiful, like the pentecostal tongues of flre for instance - how amazing - or the Benediction, because they're linked to myths which carry a degree of gravitas. Black is the color of objects that do not emit or reflect light in any part of the visible spectrum: they absorb all such frequencies of light. Although black is sometimes described as an "achromatic", or hueless, color, in practice it can be considered a color, as in expressions like "black cat" or "black paint".

"BIG DIPPER (2007) creates candle-wax chandeliers by repeatedly dipping wicks into molten wax. Inspired by the traditional technique of candle making, the machine resembles a chandelier with two ring-shaped tiers that are counter-balanced to move up and down using a pulley system."

Des Hughes
"Hughes, it appears, enjoys the act of making, forming casual relationships between objects and utilitarian materials. His world is one of surreal and comic relations, a particular form of deadpan Britishness"

"Nature turned black and the sun white. White and transparent like a crystal, remodelling the surface of the earth. Time froze but he continued his path on what increasingly resembled a lunar landscape. His perspectives fused into one black hole. A cosmos or a tiny particule. Fragments of organic life subsisted, floating in the atmosphere like meteors coming from an unknown universe; matter living through time and space, witness of his imagination. A presence, perhaps another unidentified traveller, a transmission of reality. He kept walking, his body advancing effortlessly, as if the new dimension he was entering could sustain him forever. A white light opened in the skies. A passage way emitting some kind of message. A frequency that he could receive and to which he was attracted. In this space, gravity and geometry reorientated as the ground sank beneath his feet."

“I think its very interesting when you can remove yourself from the music, even if you are the one creating it. That’s the thing with music, it allows you the possibilities to erase yourself for certain moments.....I already know what my own voice sounds like,” she continues, “so I think it’s much more interesting to treat it as an instrument and treat it the same way I treat other instruments. But with the vocals I cannot only change the pitch, but the gender."
