Having taken off from the houses, trees, fences, and fields of my childhood...
I very soon found that I was leaving the literal object behind...
I discovered form and color, and ultimately to the work
I am doing now, at once more austere in structure and more expressive in color....

"Project architect and associate Maurits van der Staay, describes the placement of each colour (there are six different colours, including grey and light grey) as “informed random”.

He says it was Renzo Piano’s ambition to “make a joyful building in contrast to the surrounding grey stone and red brick by fragmenting the colour”. The process has been a little like working out a very complicated seating plan and has taken months of manipulating physical models to ensure the same colours never appear next to each other , that they relate appropriately to the surrounding buildings, and that each facet is positioned at the correct angle."

George J. Sowden was born in Leeds, UK in 1942. He studied architecture at Gloucestershire College of Art in the 1960’s. He moved to Milano in 1970 where he started working with Ettore Sottsass and Olivetti. In 1981, he was one of the co-founders of the Memphis Group, the design movement that had a significant impact on design aesthetics in the eighties.

designs have changed through the decades..
while still remaining committed to color.
His catalogue is pure eye candy.

"Angel Orensanz educated in Barcelona and Paris, opened his studio in New York in the early 1980’s after working with several architects such as Marcel Breuer, Martin Gelber and John Portman. He has developed major installation concepts for environmental shows such as Holland Park, London; Red Square, Moscow; Roppongi-Park and Senso-ji, Tokyo; the Brandenburg Gate in Berlin; and ABC Playground (Houston St.), New York. Since the early 1990’s he has developed a prolific body of work in performance, conceptual art and video.

These pieces often carry a marked political and social commentary, reinforced by a very personal poetic language, such as “The shattered Tent” during the wars of the Balkans or his recent multimedia “Burning Universe” for Venice (Summer and Fall of 2003); “Razor in the Eye (Bunuel)” for Florence; and the very recent series “In Nasa’s Lab” and the “Steppes of Mars” in January and February of 2004, developed and shown in his New York space."

Alfred Julio Jensen
1903 – 1981

Abstract painter.
He is best known for his grids of tiny,
brightly colored triangles and squares, painted in thick impasto.
He was one of a number of artists in the 1960s working with serial images.

"ALFRED JENSEN thought about very big ideas, and he expressed them in very loud tones. He believed in a universal order in the affairs of man, and in an eternal order in the affairs of God. He believed that scientists, political philosophers and artists would interact to identify a unity of truth. Jensen was a worldly, and yet highly spiritual, artist of his time.

His professional life began as it ended, in the presence of death. "It all began," he said, "when as a seven-year-old boy I faced death's tragic implications. My mother had died and on a sunny afternoon I stood before the orange colored oblong box ornamented with its kneeling silver angels, their praying hands each pointing toward the cardinal directions. I saw my mother's remains lowered into the darkness of the grave.... Preoccupied with my early encounter with the mystery of death, my painterly effort has centered around ... the light of life, the somberness of death, the color of art, the designated pattern of phenomenal existence."
