"Robert Mapplethorpe’s sadomasochistic photographs stirred controversy in the late 1980s. But by then he had mostly abandoned such themes, and also began to deeply explore a fascination with ancient Greek statuary. In addition to photographs of actual statues, this exhibition presents the polished—and surprisingly demure—nudes inspired by them."

"During the 1980s Mapplethorpe's sense of rapture in the classical ideal found full expression through photographing live, lithe bodies of unusually powerful dancers and bodybuilders — notably those who, like him, broke stereotypes.

It was Mapplethorpe's transgression of high culture as much as the breathtaking courage of his oeuvre that brought him to the epicenter of art and censorship issues before he died of AIDS in 1988."

Paul Morrison
(these wallworks have always excited me.)



Morrison lives and works in London. He is best known for his large monochromatic botanical landscapes that are at once both familiar and foreign: Familiar because his subjects—trees, flora, and their natural surroundings—are immediately recognizable, and foreign because he can cause a mere dandelion or weed to become threatening due to its immense size and lack of color. All his images are painted in two coats of acrylic paint.

They are then scanned into a computer, manipulated and projected onto the canvas. The different elements tend to be disproportionate in size: tiny plants become huge, while massive trees shrink. This is called 'cognitive landscape'

Fossils, a dental mold, a tin votive, buttons and shoe lasts are just some of the objects that belong to Whiteread's collection of captured memories, and thus to her extended notion of drawing."

"Cléo is a pop singer who wanders around Paris while she awaits her biopsy results in fear she may have cancer. As Cléo readies herself to meet with her doctor at 7 o'clock, she meets with several friends and strangers while trying to grapple with mortality. Sensing indifference from those nearest to her, she finds herself questioning the doll-like image people have of her and is overcome by a feeling of solitude and helplessness. She finally finds some comfort in the company of stranger she meets in a park (Parc Montsouris) and with whom she is able to have a sincere conversation. He accompanies her to the hospital (Pitié-Salpêtrière Hospital), where she meets the doctor who will give her the results of the exam."

"Joseph Cornell was wary of strangers. This led him to isolate himself and become a self-taught artist. Although he expressed attraction to unattainable women like Lauren Bacall, his shyness made romantic relationships almost impossible. In later life his bashfulness verged toward reclusiveness, and he rarely left the state of New York. However, he preferred talking with women, and often made their husbands wait in the next room when he discussed business with them. He also had numerous friendships with ballerinas, who found him unique, but too eccentric to be a romantic partner."

"Cornell was heavily influenced by American Transcendentalists, Hollywood starlets (to whom he sent boxes he had dedicated to them), the French Symbolists such as Stéphane Mallarmé and Gerard de Nerval, and great dancers of the 19th century ballet such as Marie Taglioni and Fanny Cerrito."
