sottsass

"From the outset of his creative journey,
Sottsass felt uncomfortable with what he saw as Rationalism's mechanistic approach to architectural form, and he devoted his energies, instead, to experimenting with color in the context of the interior and to seeking links between painting and architecture."

Sleep Whale
new album, houseboat.
listen here

Since 2006 Sleep Whale (formerly known as Mom) have become a mainstay of the fruitful north Texas music scene. With their first full-lenth release Houseboat the band solidifies their position as creative leaders and innovators amongst their peers. Much like their first EP Little Brite, the album pairs Joel North’s deft guitar work and fluid cello playing with Bruce Blay’s impeccable ability to weave percussion, field recordings, guitar, bass, and violin into hypnotic and whimsical dreamscapes. However, unlike Little Brite, Houseboat’s songs show how the band has grown, offering more sonically complex and ambitious compositions.

Equally informed by pioneers like Steve Reich, Brian Eno, Can, and Neu!, the band’s sound has grown into a joyful soundtrack for a midnight drive down the freeway with your windows down. Their songs uniquely straddle the line between experimental ambience and accessible psych-folk-pop, all the while leading you through shimmering labyrinths of sound, color, and texture.

Portrait of a man
pt 9
(Peter Hujar)

David Wojnarowicz, portrait of his lover.

"There's always some shadows within the prettiest of scenes
I'll cast one on you, and you'll cast one on me…
That’s alright if this is the closest we will ever be.”

lyric by Ola Podrida

"In the late seventies and early eighties, Peter Hujar (1934–1987) roamed the no-man's-lands of downtown New York after-hours: an empty corner of Leroy Street (now home to Federal Express and just down the block from Gavin Brown's gallery), the silent meatpacking district, seedy swaths of the waterfront known only to cruisers like himself. He also turned his camera on fellow nightcrawlers, from his lover David Wojnarowicz to the girl he found slumped in his hallway. Hujar’s more formal studio portraits of Susan Sontag, Candy Darling, and other bohemian cohorts inspired Nan Goldin and Robert Mapplethorpe, but his contribution to the subgenre of New York street photography that consists of night shots—long dominated by the more sensational Weegee—is only beginning to emerge. Today, as the cobblestones teem with tourists and Wall Streeters, Hujar’s nocturnal city looks improbably desolate, like the long-exposure streetscapes of the earliest photographers."

I need another place
Will there be peace
I need another world
This one's nearly gone
Still have to many dreams
Never seen the light
I need another world

-Anthony Hegarty.

self portrait...

"Mainly a portrait photographer, he also photographed an array of subjects from farm animals to nudes. He also turned his camera on fellow nightcrawlers who inhabited the East Village art scene of the late 70s and 80s. His most famous photograph is possibly, "Candy Darling on Her Deathbed". His now infamous book, entitled Portraits in Life and Death (1976), is quite the collector's item. Peter Hujar was a long term partner of artist David Wojnarowicz, who died with AIDS in 1992. Hujar died of AIDS complications in 1987."

Divine

"Hujar was respected by his peers and revered by those who took inspiration from him (Nan Goldin among them). In the art world he was marginalised, known for being volatile and at times uncooperative. He lived without assets, sometimes without enough money to eat. He died in 1987. His lover, David Wojnarowicz, took photographs of his body as it lay on the hospital cot: Hujar's face, frozen in a stark and rapturous expression; his foot; his hand; his body lay there bathed in the neon light of the hospital corridor."

Ernesto Gismondi

Italian designer and engineer Gismondi played an important role in progressive design circles. Having undertaken aeronautical and aerospace studies in Milan (graduating in 1957) and Rome (1959), he founded the lighting manufacturing firm Artemide in Milan in 1959 with Sergio Mazza. From 1970 onwards he designed a number of lights himself, including the Tholos wall lamp (1979) and the Zen (1988) and Tebe floor lamps. His professional and entrepreneurial involvement with progressive design currents in Italy was further evidenced by his sponsorship and presidency of the progressive Memphis design group, as well as the vice-presidency of ADI (Associazione per il Disegno Industriale), membership of the Council for the Milan Triennale, and a number of ministerial commissions on various aspects of design.

Nov 23, 2008 NY

Wow! I just realized that I began You Have Been Here Sometime about a year ago, Nov 23, 2008 to be exact!. (here.) This was the first photograph I ever posted, a shot I took in New York, of light cascading onto the floor of my friend's apartment in the East Village. I've met so many amazing people through this site, and a few very close friends through YHBHS. It seems like so much has changed in a year's time. Thanks for the friendships, the correspondence, the inspiration, and the community.
Here's to 2010

All the best, David

Because there's a million ways to go
You know that there are....

"You know, at one time, I used to break into pet shops to liberate the canaries.
But I decided that this was an idea way before its time.
Zoos are full, prisons are overflowing...
oh my, how the world still dearly loves a cage."

- Maude

"You can do what you want
The opportunity's on
And if you can find a new way
You can do it today
You can make it all true
And you can make it undo
You see ah ah ah
Its easy ah ah ah
You only need to know
Well if you want to say yes, say yes
And if you want to say no, say no
'cause there's a million ways to go
You know that there are...

their first outdoor environmental work, 1961...

CHRISTO AND JEANNE-CLAUDE DOCKSIDE PACKAGES, COLOGNE HARBOR, 1961 At the same time as Christo‚s first personal exhibition, at the Haro Lauhus Gallery, in Cologne in 1961, Christo and Jeanne-Claude created their first temporary outdoor environmental work of art. The gallery was near the waterfront of the Rhine River. For the Dockside Packages the artists used several stacks of oil barrels and large rolls of industrial paper covering them with tarpaulins which they secured with ropes. With the permission from the Port Authority all the materials were borrowed from the dockworkers. Dockside Packages was composed of separate parts of various sizes, each approximately 5 x 2 x 10 meters (16.4 x 6.5 x 32.8 feet). The temporary work of art remained for two weeks.

talbot & deru. genus. special edition cd
dear oh dear records. oh!one
music composed and produced by joby talbot & benjamin wynn

genus is an electro-acoustic score for wayne mcgregor's ballet of the same title, based on charles darwin's discovery of evolution. the musical composition in eight parts is a collaborational work between joby talbot and deru. talbot has a high profile as a film and tv composer. screen credits include cult television comedy series ‘the league of gentlemen’ and ‘the hitchhiker’s guide to the galaxy’. deru is benjamin wynn, an electronic music producer from los angeles. his music is best described as an amalgamation of hip-hop, electronica and idm. genus embodies a synergy and culmination of various musical influences. minimal music and 20th century compositional textures performed by a ten part choir and four string instruments establish a perfect symbiosis with deru's complex electronic patterns. indescribably beautiful and haunting, the music is delivered with intensity and artistry and can be enjoyed as a self-contained work, even if there is no opportunity to view the ballet.

Central Library’s Getty Gallery:
“Richard Neutra, Architect: Sketches and Drawings”
though Dec 31, 2009

Richard Neutra
downtown Los Angeles Public Library

The exhibition, Richard Neutra, Architect: Sketches and Drawings, featuring travel sketches, figure drawings and building renderings by one of modernism’s most important architects, Richard Neutra (1892-1970), has been extended at Central Library’s Getty Gallery, 630 W. Fifth St., downtown Los Angeles. The exhibit is free and open to the public during regular library hours. The exhibition features choice selections at the Charles E. Young Research Library’s Department of Special Collections, UCLA. The pieces range from early pencil sketches from Neutra’s student wanderings in 1913 to later pastel renderings of his Los Angeles houses from the 1950s. Selected for their artistic quality, the works illustrate Neutra’s skill in traditional notions of composition combined with his innovative techniques of architectural representation. “Not only was Richard Neutra an imaginative and innovative architect, he was also a remarkable draughtsman, and the Department of Special Collections is pleased to have the chance to share its collection of his sketches with visitors to this exhibition,” says Department Director Victoria Steele. Neutra’s work in Southern California – characterized by the post and beam structure, cantilevered roof slabs extending into space and an emphasis on the interpenetration of inner and outer space – developed a regional architecture that gained international prominence.

"Do you feel like a remnant
Of something that's past
Do you find things are moving
Just a little too fast.
Do you hope to find new ways
Of quenching your thirst,
Do you hope to find new ways
Of doing better than your worst.
Hey slow Jane, let me prove
Slow, slow Jane, we're on the move."

A real live giver, could have been a boot.
I could have been a signpost, could have been a clock

I could have been
One of these things first
I could have been
One of these things first."
