Gianni Columbo, 1937-1993, Italian

"a emancipation of the senses,
feeling ourselves feeling. "

"a dark room you enter that seems to morph and move around you,
expanding and contracting. "

"Gianni Colombo was one of the most important Kinetic artists – a movement based on early twentieth-century futurist tendencies which developed internationally during the 1950s. Kinetic Art explored the possibility of art in movement as a revolutionary artform that would allow for active participation of viewers, no longer simply kept in the role of passive spectators. Kinetic artists such as Colombo and Jesus Rafael Soto, also exhibited in the Biennale, were utopian and visionary; they saw artistic practice as part of an attempt to revolutionise daily life through perceptual freedom and the emancipation of the senses – feeling ourselves feeling. Against the notion of individual authorship, in 1959–60 Colombo founded the Gruppo T, an experimental art collective. He won a prize at the Venice Biennale in 1968 for his Elastic Space (1967), which is presented again for the Biennale of Sydney – a dark room you enter that seems to morph and move around you, expanding and contracting."

Two lamps: "Gea Lamp" 1970, by Gianni Columbo.....

"Gianni Columbo experiments with new balances to change the feelings of the viewer, by creating beautiful places sinestetici, fields of interaction between the various sensory organs
. The desire is to disrupt the passivity of perception of places, from the gallery at the museum, the house to the palace, showing the inertia of their use."

Marconi Union : "a Japanese-themed suite of minimalist ambience"
listen here too....

"Richard Talbot and Jamie Crossley met while working in a Manchester record shop. At the time Richard was making long ultra minimal ambient pieces of music, Jamie borrowed a CD of these and added more instrumentation, he then gave the new recordings back to Richard who then overlaid more music onto Jamie's version, they carried on bouncing tracks backwards and forwards, taking turns to add or remove layers of sound. Tracks would develop almost organically sometimes only taking shape after months of work. The process was repeated several times over the course of 18 months. Neither of them had any intention of doing anything more than make music that they would enjoy listening to. Occasionally they would play a track in the shop without revealing who it was by and they found that they quickly started getting repeated enquiries from customers about whether the music was available to buy. After a few months it became apparent that they had recorded the basis of an album almost by default and in response to encouragement from a number of interested people they mixed a final version."

Aldo van den Nieuwelaar

"Aldo van den Nieuwelaar was born in Tilburg in 1944, studied at the Academie voor Beeldende Kunst (Academy for Visual Art) in Breda and subsequently worked for various Amsterdam architectural firms. In 1969 he founded his own studio. Using a minimum of resources and materials, Van den Nieuwelaar aims to make user-friendly forms which do not dominate a space, but make it more liveable. He often works with geometrical figures and he prefers artificial light because 'it distorts a space less than light from a light bulb’. His best-known design is the ‘Amsterdammer’. As an architect, Aldo van den Nieuwelaar was responsible for the Waterlooplein underground station in Amsterdam."

Heath Ceramics
Los Angeles store.. here..

"The late Edith Heath, was a defining influence of twentieth century American design, creating distinctive handcrafted ceramic dinnerware and architectural tiles that were unlike anything commercially available at the time. She and her husband Brian founded Heath Ceramics in 1948, which quickly became a California institution, symbolizing the creative free spirit of California."

Simon Dybbroe Moller
here.

"Simon Dybbroe Møller subjects twentieth-century avant-garde to a subjective revision in his work. His installations, photographs and films allude to a seemingly astonishing precision in the accidental; convey by transformation, manipulation or mirroring, a mystical aura to the putatively logical.

He is interested in the failures and peripheries of recent art history and combines individual fragments in order to construe new references or to lay emphasis on forgotten protagonists and bypaths. A side of modernism emerges behind the smooth, clear, and rationalist façade of abstract and conceptual art that already Sol LeWitt noted in his Sentences on Conceptual Art when he wrote: “We are mystics rather than rationalists.”
