Alexandre Noll
1890-1970

"Working exclusively in wood, Alexandre Noll spent his lifetime exploring the material’s possibilities, creating his earthy and sensual sculpture, furniture and utilitarian objects from small-scale vessels to larger-scale cabinets and chairs that strike a wonderful balance between modern and primitive forms."

from art and auction article here:
"But many feel the greatest lure of Noll’s work is the mystique surrounding it. You can picture him humbly toiling away, carving a single chair from a huge block of the wood he so adored: teak, rosewood, ebony, mahogany, elm, beech, walnut — even, during the Second World War, when wood was rationed, scavenged railway ties. "Everything he made was sculpture, really," says Grajales wistfully. "When you come across a Noll piece, you feel an immediate urge to touch it, to stroke it gently. There’s not much art you can say that about."

"The Shadow of beauty is the beast. Because they're repressed such beliefs and feelings are typically unconscious; they influence our entire lives, tell us what we can and can not do, and drive our behaviors"

Carl Jung.....

Diedre King

"Carl Jung saw in unconscious material, especially dreams and fantasies, an unfolding of a process. This process was uniquely expressed in each person, but it had nevertheless a common structure.

Jung called it the "individuation process" in which the potential of a person's psyche is seeking fulfillment. The concept of Indivuduation is considered by many to be his major contribution. It is a process which generally takes place in the last half of life - a time in the life cycle neglected by many other psychologists. While the first half of life is devoted to making one's way and establishing oneself in the world, the last half can be a time of psychological development, of moving toward awareness, integration, wholeness. "

What is it that I wish to convey?...I wish to convey something immaterial and I have to use material means for it. I have to convey something which is inexpressible and I have to use expression. I have to convey, perhaps, something unconscious and I have to use conscious means. I know in advance that I shall not succeed and cannot succeed, and therefore all I can do is to get nearer and nearer in some asymptotic approach; I do my best, but it is an agonizing struggle in which, if I am…any kind of self-conscious thinker, I am engaged for the whole of my life.

Cone of Power

The cone of power has been associated with the circle, the symbol of the sun, unity, eternity, rebirth and the triangle. The triangle has been associated with the elements and pyramids which represents the higher spiritual desires of all things. Three is the number of the triangle...

(agnes martin, print)

(unknown)

(felix gonzales torres, silent majority, 1991)

"It is considered that the psychic energy produced within the cone of power is similar to the power of prayer raised within prayer meetings. Witches who have greatly developed this ability sometimes see the cone of power as a luminous, pulsating cloud flooded with changing colors, or as a silvery-blue light."

(paul evans coffee table)

(jonathan monk)

"Believed incidents of cones of power have been recorded in history. In parts of ancient Syria, the cone was a symbol of Astrate. The cone has been symbolized by tall, conical hats worn by magicians and witches.

Witches have claimed victories against hostile forces with the use of cones of power. In 1588 the helped to defeat the Spanish Armada, and in the 1700 they raised power against Napoleon.

In 1940 there was much fear the Hitler would invade England which resulted in producing "Operation Cone of Power" on Lammas Day, August 1. Hundreds of witches from covens throughout southern England gathered skyclad in New Forest to send Hitler and his generals telepathic thoughts to stay out of England. The German armies never invaded the country. Whether or not the witches' messages were beneficial is not certain."
